Feeling a bit nervous about the chance of rain on your wedding day? It’s totally normal—outdoor weddings and unpredictable weather go hand in hand. But here’s the bright side: as a New Hampshire wedding photographer, I’ve got some tips to help you embrace the rain and turn it into a fun and memorable part of your wedding day. Let’s turn that drizzle into a highlight of your celebration and get ready with a few tips for handling if it rains on your wedding day like Abby and Chris did during their Bretton Woods wedding!

How to Embrace when it Rains on Your Wedding Day

When you book an outdoor wedding venue, you’re likely anxiously checking your weather app as the big day approaches, hoping for sunshine. You might even convince yourself that a cloudy or overcast day would be okay—just as long as it stays dry!
But then, just 24 hours before saying “I do,” the weather decides to bring on and off rain throughout the day. That’s exactly what happened for Abby and Chris, but they handled it like champs. By embracing the rain, they made their day feel incredibly magical.
Abby and Chris kicked off their day at the Omni Mount Washington Resort, famous for its history and incredible views of Mount Washington, the tallest peak in New Hampshire!
Location: 310 Mount Washington Hotel Rd, Bretton Woods, NH 03575
Average Price Per Night: $300+
Best Time to Visit: June-September; However, any time you visit will be magical!
Once Abby and Chris were ready, we took the gondola up to the top of Bretton Woods for their ceremony and reception. The rain had created a thick fog, so the views of Mount Washington were mostly hidden. Honestly, I was probably more disappointed about missing out on those epic views than Abby and Chris were!
Location: 99 Ski Area Rd. Bretton Woods, NH 03575
Vibe: Ski lodge surrounding the White Mountains
With any outdoor wedding venue, you want to make sure that you are collaborating with your wedding planner and photographer on alternative locations to not only host your wedding ceremony/reception, but also for portraits!
Pro Tip: Always ask your venue what their back up plan is for weather!
While Abby and Chris were total rockstars and embraced the rain, we also were able to sneak away during a moment of no rain and get some outdoor bride and groom portraits on the trail nearby!
If rain is in the forecast for your wedding day, embrace it! Grab some umbrellas that match your color scheme for you, your bridal party, and your guests. Clear umbrellas are a chic and elegant option that looks stunning in photos. For an extra touch of fun, consider getting matching rain boots and umbrellas for your bridal party to create some memorable and playful photos!
Let’s face it: the last thing you want on your wedding day is a blister from wet heels. Be prepared for any weather by packing some comfy shoes that can handle getting wet and won’t leave you wishing you’d chosen something else!
Ultimately, this day is all about celebrating you and your partner! Embrace the chance to get close in portraits and channel your inner child who loved splashing in the rain. While rain may not be ideal, it can create unique, candid moments that you wouldn’t have otherwise experienced!
I get how tough it can be when things don’t go as planned on your wedding day. But remember, you picked your NH wedding photographer for a reason! Trust them to capture you and your loved ones just as you are. Whatever the weather brings, your day is going to be incredible!
If you remember one thing from this blog, let it be this: your wedding photos will reflect how the day truly unfolded—the raw, the candid, the unexpected, and everything in between. If your day includes some indoor portraits you weren’t expecting, that’s perfectly okay! Trust the vision you had when you chose your venue.

Because Abby and Chris are very outdoorsy, they had a seating chart with all of their favorite mountain peaks in NH! (So cool)
I’m still in awe of how the thick fog created this moody and romantic feel throughout their portraits – the beauty of when it rains on your wedding day!
