When Carson reached out to me for a surprise proposal in Rye, New Hampshire, I was beyond stoked. We had the perfect plan to execute this mission and we did it flawlessly, if I say so myself! It all went down on May 1st, 2024, when the weather was finally starting to feel like spring in New Hampshire. There was a cool breeze, but it was the kind of day that made you want to spend all your time outside—the kind of day that feels like something magical is just around the corner. And for Bridget, it definitely was!

A Match Made in Heaven: Bridget and Carson’s Story
Bridget and Carson met in college through mutual friends, and from the way they looked at each other, it was clear their connection ran deep. They had been through a lot together, and Carson wanted to make his surprise proposal something she’d never forget. Bridget thought they were just headed out to do a maternity shoot, and honestly, she was glowing with excitement for it. Little did she know, Carson had a much bigger surprise waiting.

I’ve shot so many moments at Wallis Sands Park and Rye Harbor State Park, and let me tell you—it’s one of those places that’s full of hidden gems. The kind of place where you can easily tuck away for an intimate, personal moment, and that’s exactly what Carson wanted for their proposal. As someone who’s spent a lot of time photographing in this area, I knew just the spots that would give them that perfect mix of beauty and privacy.

The Moment We Were All Waiting For…
We started the session like any other, focusing on capturing Bridget’s joy and excitement as she anticipated the arrival of their little one. I could feel the anticipation building from Carson’s side—he kept glancing at me as if to ask, “Is this the right time?” When I gave him the thumbs up approval, he got down on one knee and asked Bridget to marry him.

The look on Bridget’s face was priceless—complete shock, followed by tears, followed by laughter. There was no question that her answer was “yes.” It was one of those really damn beautiful moments that make you stop and appreciate just how precious time and love are. Carson didn’t stop there, either. After the proposal, he had arranged a surprise dinner with Bridget’s family, making the day even more unforgettable for her!

Why Consider Rye, NH for Your Surprise Proposal?
I’m so glad Carson chose Rye for this proposal because it’s a place I know like the back of my hand. From Wallis Sands Park to Rye Harbor State Park, these spots are hidden treasures on New Hampshire’s coastline. It’s one thing to visit the area as a tourist, but knowing where the best, most intimate locations are? That’s a game-changer.

8 Tips for Planning a Successful Surprise Proposal with your Photographer
Planning a surprise proposal? Here’s how to make sure it goes smoothly with your photographer:
- Pick the Right Location: Choose a spot that’s special or scenic but keeps your partner comfortable and relaxed. Wallis Sands Park was perfect for Carson and Bridget—romantic and easy to access!
- Create a Believable Story: Make sure they don’t suspect anything! Carson had Bridget thinking it was a maternity shoot! Pick something believable to keep them unsuspecting.
- Coordinate with Your Photographer Early: Work out all the details in advance. Plan a signal for when you’re about to propose, and let your photographer know the exact timing for capturing the moment.
- Choose the Best Time: Golden/blue hour is perfect for beautiful lighting. Plan the proposal around the best time of day for photos, and make sure your photographer knows the schedule.
- Keep It Natural: Don’t overthink it! Let the proposal flow naturally, and your photographer will capture those genuine, emotional reactions.
- Add Personal Touches: Incorporate meaningful details like a special location or memento. These little things make the proposal even more memorable.
- Plan a Post-Proposal Celebration: Whether it’s dinner with family (like Carson planned) or a quiet moment together, having something planned after adds to the excitement.
- Relax: Enjoy the moment. Trust your photographer to capture everything, and soak in the experience.
