Ready to Plan your EPIC Adventure Elopement?

Let me take a wild guess—you’re dreaming of an Iceland Elopement? Honestly, I don’t blame you. With its otherworldly landscapes and super accessible flights, Iceland is a dream destination for couples looking for an unforgettable elopement experience. This guide has everything you need to plan your ultimate Iceland elopement—from epic locations and must-do activities to marriage laws, weather tips, and, of course, finding the perfect Iceland elopement photographer to capture it all. If your dream day includes puffin spotting, chasing waterfalls, and taste-testing Iceland’s famous hot dogs, you’re exactly where you need to be.

Why Iceland is the Perfect Spot for Your Destination Elopement

Iceland isn’t just beautiful—it’s straight-up majestic. The kind of place that leaves you in awe at every turn. The first time I visited, I felt like I had stepped into a real-life fairytale. Beyond its jaw-dropping landscapes, Iceland is made for adventurous elopements, giving you the freedom to create an experience that’s as wild, intimate, and unforgettable as your love story. Let’s dive in to planning your elopement in Iceland!

When is the Best Time of Year to Elope in Iceland?

You’ll hear a lot of different opinions on this—everyone has their favorite time of year to visit Iceland, and honestly, they’re all right in their own way. The truth? An adventure elopement in Iceland is pure magic no matter the season. The landscapes are always breathtaking, the experience is always unforgettable, and you really can’t go wrong.

But if you’re asking for my take? Late summer to early fall is where it’s at!

But if you want a quick rundown to help you decide which season is best for your Iceland elopement:

Spring (April – June)

  • Temperature/Weather: 30–50°F (0–10°C)
  • What to Expect: The days start getting longer, the snow begins to melt, and fresh greenery and wildflowers begin to bloom. Waterfalls are at their absolute peak, rushing with power from the melting snow. While the weather can be a bit unpredictable (think sunshine one minute and a light snow flurry the next), the trade-off is fewer crowds and more accessible roads.
  • Perfect for: Couples who love a mix of snow and spring blooms, don’t mind a little weather unpredictability, and want epic waterfalls as the backdrop for their elopement.

Summer (June – August)

  • Temperature/Weather: 50–60°F (10–15°C)
  • What to Expect: Midnight Sun means nearly endless daylight, so you can adventure for hours without worrying about sunset! Iceland is at its greenest, puffins are everywhere, and the weather is at its most stable (though rain showers can still pop up). This is also peak tourist season, so expect some crowds at popular spots.
  • Perfect for: Couples who want all-day adventures, dream of lush green landscapes, predictable weather, and don’t mind a bit more company at iconic locations.

Fall (September – October)

  • Temperature/Weather: 40–50°F (5–10°C)
  • What to Expect: A short but stunning season where Iceland turns golden and moody. The Northern Lights start making appearances, and the summer crowds begin to fade. Waterfalls are still going strong, and the weather is crisp but not bitter cold yet.
  • Perfect for: Couples looking for cozy autumn vibes, fewer crowds, and the chance to catch the Northern Lights on their elopement night. Glass houses are popular during this time!

Winter (November – March)

  • Temperature/Weather: 20–35°F (-7–2°C)
  • What to Expect: If you’re dreaming of an elopement straight out of a winter fairytale, this is it. Snow-covered landscapes, frozen waterfalls, and ice caves make for jaw-dropping scenery. Days are much shorter (hello, 4-hour daylight in December), but that means more time for stargazing and chasing the Northern Lights. Some locations will be harder to access due to snow, but there are still plenty of incredible spots to explore.
  • Perfect for: Couples who love winter wonderland vibes, want a cozy and intimate experience, and are excited about the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights on their elopement night.

No matter the season, Iceland is pure magic—you really can’t go wrong. It all comes down to what kind of adventure you want!

How to Choose Your Iceland Elopement Locations for Your Special DayMy Take as an Iceland Elopement Photographer

Speaking of choosing your perfect adventure—if you’re feeling torn, don’t worry, I’ve got plenty of ideas to help! As an Iceland elopement photographer, I’m all about helping you create an experience that feels just right for you.

But first things first—how long do you want your elopement to be? Most couples go for a multi-day adventure, and honestly, it’s the best way to soak in every epic moment without feeling rushed. With so many jaw-dropping places to explore, giving yourself extra time means you can truly experience Iceland rather than just checking off locations. Trust me, you won’t regret it!

Regions of Iceland to Consider for Your Destination Elopement

Iceland is divided into seven unique regions, each offering a completely different adventure. Whether you’re dreaming of dramatic cliffs, black sand beaches, or steaming geothermal pools, there’s a perfect spot for your elopement. These regions include The South, East, North, Westfjords, West, Reykjanes, and the Reykjavik capital area.

The North Region: Remote, Rugged, & Full of Adventure

If you’re looking for dramatic landscapes with lava fields, deep valleys, and stunning peninsulas, the North is calling your name! Here, you’ll find Dettifoss Waterfall (Europe’s most powerful waterfall!) and the Northern part of Vatnajökull National Park. This region is full of charming fishing villages and has a wild, untouched feel. If you’re up for a road trip, drive the Diamond Circle—a scenic route with five breathtaking stops, each offering a completely different experience.

Some of the most famous and beautiful spots include Gullfoss, Skogafoss, Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach – and so much more! Plus, it’s just a 30-40 minute drive from Reykjavik, so it’s easy to get to while still feeling like an otherworldly escape!

This area is famous for its colorful rhyolite formations and mineral-rich magma deposits that create an almost surreal landscape! If you’re into arts and culture, you’ll love the summer music and art festivals that bring this region to life. And for an absolute must-see? Stuðlagil Canyon—home to insane basalt column formations and a glacial blue-green river that looks straight out of a dream. [Wheeww, I got a little nerdy there, but it’s seriously so incredibly beautiful].

Snæfellsjökull National Park—Iceland’s only national park that stretches all the way to the sea. The Reykjanes Peninsula may be small, but it packs a punch with its rugged coastline, iconic lighthouses, and the steaming Blue Lagoon! How to Decide on What Iceland Elopement Activities to Include

If I’m being totally honest, I could write an entire guide just on epic activities for your Iceland elopement. There’s that much to experience! But for the sake of keeping things simple, I’m sharing some of my absolute favorites—ones that not only create unforgettable memories but also make for some of the most breathtaking backdrops for your elopement photos.

  1. Book a Glass House to see the Northern Lights
  2. Take an evening stroll on the Black Sand Beaches
  3. Go on a road trip along Ring Road
  4. Waterfalls, waterfalls, and even more waterfalls – Skogafoss or Haifoss are my top two picks!
  5. Visit a Glacial Lagoon at Jokulsarlon
  6. Transport to a moonscape that truly feels like another planet
  7. Rent a 4×4 and visit the highlands – pro tip: plan extra time to dip into a hot spring!
  8. Take a helicopter ride to see a birds eye view of Icelandic glaciers and volcanoes
  9. Tour the ice caves during your winter Iceland elopement adventure
  10. Visit the Viking Ruins and plan a romantic picnic surrounded by the moss covered mountains

Renting a Car in Iceland

Renting a car is an absolute must for getting around Iceland! Many of the most epic locations are hours apart, and public transportation is pretty limited. If you’re planning to explore off-the-beaten-path spots (which I highly recommend!), a 4×4 rental is the way to go to ensure you can navigate Iceland’s rugged terrain safely.

Here are a few options to get your adventure started!

Things to know about renting a car in Iceland:

  • You will drive on the right side of the road
  • Gas is expensive compared to most U.S prices
  • Speed traps are very common around Reykjavik (speed cameras)
  • Speeding tickets are very expensive – don’t speed, friend
  • There are roads marked as “F Roads” – you cannot drive on these roads during offseasons because it is illegal, or inaccessible via vehicle
  • Headlights must be on at all times due to the fog

Getting Your Marriage License in Iceland

When it comes to tying the knot in Iceland, you’ve got two options. The easiest? Take care of the legal paperwork at home before heading off for your epic adventure. That way, you can focus on the fun stuff—like saying your vows with a glacier backdrop or beneath the Northern Lights!

But if you’re set on making it official in Iceland, no worries! As a non-resident, you’ll just need to go through the legal process to get married there. It takes a little extra planning, but I’ve got you covered with all the details to make it as smooth as possible.

1. Gather Your Documents:

  • Marriage Notification Form (hjónavígsluskýrsla) – Confirms no legal impediments to your marriage.
  • Certificate of Marital Status – Issued within 8 weeks before your wedding.
  • Divorce Decree (if applicable).
  • Birth Certificates (original copies).
  • Proof of Estate Settlement (if widowed).
  • Passport Copies.
  • Travel Itinerary (entry/exit dates).

2. Submit Your Documents

03. Final Appointment Before Your Wedding

  • The week of your wedding, schedule a 5-minute appointment at the local District Commissioner’s Office (location depends on your ceremony site).
  • Bring all original documents to receive your marriage license.

That’s it—once you’ve got your license, you’re all set to get married in Iceland! For more information about this process, head to their website, here!

While we’re on the page of legalities, unlike some places, Iceland has pretty strict rules about who can perform ceremonies—so unfortunately, a friend or family member can’t legally officiate. But don’t worry! You have options. You can either hire a registered officiant or go the symbolic route [that I mentioned above], where a loved one leads the ceremony while you handle the legal paperwork separately.

Leave No Trace in Iceland

Iceland’s beautiful green moss, wildflowers, and one-of-a-kind landscapes are truly magical—but they’re also incredibly delicate. The moss, in particular, can take thousands of years to recover if damaged. To help preserve Iceland’s natural beauty for future generations, it’s essential to follow Leave No Trace principles during your elopement. Let’s keep this breathtaking country just as wild and stunning as it is today!
