If you’re dreaming of engagement photos that feel coastal, relaxed, a little adventurous, and still suuuuper easy to get to, Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth is such a good freaking choice.

It has all the Maine goodness you probably want without making your session feel like a whole production. Ocean views? Yep. Sandy beach? Yep. Rocky shoreline? Also yep. Pretty sunset light? Good lawd, yes!!

Kettle Cove is one of those places that feels simple in the best way. It’s located along the coast of Cape Elizabeth, close to Crescent Beach, and just outside of Portland, which makes it an easy option if you want coastal engagement photos without driving hours up the coast.

And even though it’s not a huge location, that’s part of what makes it so good for couples photos. You don’t need a massive landscape to have a session that feels full. You just need a location with variety, good light, and enough space to actually relax into the experience.

We can wander, pause, laugh at the wind doing absolutely whatever it wants with your hair, and let the photos happen naturally instead of rushing through a curated shot list.

For Kettle Cove sunset photos, I usually recommend starting before the actual sunset so we have time to play around with the different parts of the location. For fall sessions, I love outfits with texture and movement. Think cozy sweaters, denim, boots you don’t mind getting a little sandy, flowy dresses, jackets, or layers you can actually move around in.

What to Wear for Your Kettle Cove Engagement Photos

For beach and coastal sessions, I always recommend wearing something that feels good to move in.

You’ll probably be walking through sand, sitting on rocks, dealing with wind, and maybe getting a little salty by the end. So this is not the time for an outfit that only looks good if you stand perfectly still.

A few easy outfit ideas:

• Neutral layers with denim or linen
• A flowy dress with boots or sandals
• A cozy sweater with relaxed pants
• Earth tones, soft blues, creams, browns, rust, olive, or black

2. Kettle Cove couples photos feel a little more tucked away and textured. You still get the beach, but you also get rocks, coves, and that cozy coastal feeling that works really well for engagement photos.

Honestly, both are beautiful. The better fit just depends on the vibe you want.

A Few Things to Know Before Your Kettle Cove Session

Because Kettle Cove is a state park area, it’s worth planning ahead just a little. Parking can be limited, especially during busier seasons, so leave yourself extra time. If we’re planning for sunset, I’ll help think through timing so we’re not sprinting from the parking lot with five minutes of pretty light left. 

You’ll also want shoes that can handle sand, rocks, and uneven ground. You don’t need to dress like you’re hiking Katahdin, but a little practicality goes a long way.
