Let’s be honest—if you’re Googling how to elope in Maine, there’s a solid chance you’ve already had the “big wedding” convo and thought… nope. You’re not alone.
Maybe it’s the idea of centerpieces and seating charts that makes you break into a cold sweat. Maybe you just want to say “I do” with muddy boots, salty air, and zero pressure. Whatever the reason, Maine is hands-down one of the best places to elope if you’re looking for something that feels chill, meaningful, and actually fun.

Hey hey, I’m Erica—if this is your first time here, welcome!
I’m a photographer based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, but I’m in Maine constantly (sometimes for weddings, sometimes for questionable Facebook Marketplace finds). I’m a big fan of the Seacoast—like, probably its biggest—and I’m so glad you’re here.
If you’re thinking about eloping in Maine, I hope this guide helps you feel more excited and a little less overwhelmed. And if you still have questions? I’d be happy to help you sort it all out. Make the first move, here
Let’s break it all down—from legal logistics to the best elopement spots—so you can skip the stress and get straight to the part where you marry your favorite person.

Why Elope in Maine?
Out of all of the beautiful places along the seacoast, Maine truly does stand out for several reasons (& yes, while I live in NH, Maine deserves it’s moment, too)
- Diverse landscapes — Coastline, forest, mountains, a National Park…all within a few hours.
- Fewer crowds — Especially if you skip peak summer weekends.
- Year-round beauty — Fall colors, snowy vibes, wildflower fields, ocean views… you name it–Maine probably has it!
- Feels personal — Whether you want your dog, your parents, or just the two of you, Maine gives you space to do your day your way.

The Legal Stuff: How to Get Married in Maine (Even If You Don’t Live Here)
No need to be a Maine resident to tie the knot here—everyone’s welcome. But you do need a marriage license.
Here’s how it works:
Maine Resident
If you both live in Maine, you’ll need to apply together at the town office where one of you lives (pick either—no need to go to both). If only one of you is a Maine resident, apply in their town.
Out of State Resident
Apply in person at any municipal office. Sweet and simple!
Additional notes
- Bring a photo ID and $40 for the license fee.
- The license is valid immediately and for 90 days.
- You’ll need an officiant—this can be a registered officiant, a judge, or even a friend who’s ordained online.
- After the ceremony, your officiant will return the signed license to the town office and boom—you’re legally hitched.
Want something quick and easy–but still you? You can also opt for a courthouse wedding. I wrote a whole post on how to get married at Portland City Hall—it’s super helpful if you’re leaning toward the courthouse route.

The 5 Best Places to Elope in Maine
You’ve got the license. Now let’s talk about scenery. Whether you want mountains, coastline, or a cozy Airbnb in the woods, Maine’s got you covered.
1. Acadia National Park
The crown jewel of Maine elopements. Acadia is full of huge granite cliffs, pine forests, ocean views, and sunrise on Cadillac Mountain (there is nothing like it). But it’s not just about the views—there’s so much to do here.
Planning an Acadia elopement? I’ve got not one but two blog posts to help:
A Few of My Go-To Spots for Saying “Heck Yes” in Acadia
Want a little adventure mixed in with your vows? Start your day with a sunrise hike (or drive, I’m down for anything!) up Cadillac Mountain—one of the first places to catch the sunrise in the U.S. It’s quiet, golden, and honestly kind of magical to start your wedding day above the clouds. After soaking in the view and sharing your vows, head over to Jordan Pond for a more intimate ceremony by the water. It’s peaceful, surrounded by mountains, and you can even celebrate with popovers and tea at the Jordan Pond House if you’re feeling fancy-but-still-cozy.

If a soft-sand ceremony with ocean waves crashing in the background sounds like your kind of vibe, Sand Beach is a solid choice. It’s stunning at sunrise (seriously—worth the early wake-up), and you’ll usually have the place mostly to yourselves before the crowds roll in. Chill, romantic, and 10/10 recommend kicking off your elopement with your toes in the sand.
Want drama in the best way possible? Otter Cliff brings the bold, rocky coastline energy. You can say your vows with the Atlantic crashing behind you and then hang out nearby for a snack break or a just-married moment.

Looking for something low-key, peaceful, and right by the water? Seawall Picnic Area is super underrated and honestly one of my faves. It’s got that easy-going “we’re just here to enjoy this moment” kind of feel. Whether you keep it just the two of you or bring a few favorite people along, it’s the perfect place for a laid-back ceremony—and maybe a post-vow snack or champagne toast at a picnic table!
2. Portland
Quirky, coastal, and full of character. Portland is perfect for couples who want cool architecture, hidden corners, and lobster rolls after their ceremony. You can even do it all at City Hall (seriously—this couple did & it was truly one of the most fun elopements that I have been a part of!).

Whether you’re sharing your vows on the water, hitting up the ice cream shop on the way to the courthouse, or celebrating with a fun, intimate dinner in the city—the opportunities here are limitless!
3. Pepperrell Cove
A waterfront spot that feels straight out of a movie. It’s private, peaceful, and perfect if you’re inviting a few guests.

You can read more about one of my favorite weddings there right here.
4. Your Family’s Vacation Home
Don’t underestimate the power of a personal place. If you’ve got access to a lake house or coastal cabin, eloping at home can be incredibly special. This coastal Maine wedding proves that backyard vibes can still feel elevated. P.s. there was an oyster bar at this wedding that lives rent free in my mind.

5. A Hiking Spot in the Mountains
If you want to earn your vows with a little sweat (and maybe a celebratory summit beer), Maine’s trails are full of gems (I have a list ready to go!). Just a heads-up—State/National parks often have specific rules around ceremonies and photography.
But don’t stress, I’ve got you.
I’ll help you figure out:
- where to park
- whether you need a permit
- and the best times to go so you’re not dodging tourists or harsh midday sun.
We’ll plan it all together so you can just show up and enjoy the hell out of your day!

When to Elope in Maine
Having photographed many adventure elopements all over the country (and even Iceland), I truly don’t believe there is a bad time to visit Maine for your elopement.

But here’s what to expect in each season:
Spring (April- Early June)
Quiet vibes, a bit cool, and unpredictable rain (If you’re worried about rain, I have a blog post all about how to make it super magical).

Summer (July-August)
This season is by far the most popular, so you’ll want to plan for crowds. The days are longer, the beaches are fun, and everything is open for the season!
Fall (September-October)
From the fall leaves, to the crisp air, to the golden light. This season is very popular for weddings–so book early! Vibing with me? I’d love to chat about the day you’re dreaming of!

Winter (November-March)
While the longest season, it has its moments that are truly special. From the snowy mountains, to hitting the slopes, or the occasional moose sighting. A cozy cabin or airbnb is a popular choice for this season!
How I Help You Actually Enjoy the Day
Maine elopements should feel spontaneous—but that doesn’t mean you should wing it. That’s where I come in.
Here’s how I help my couples:
- Location scouting based on what feels like you
- Timeline planning that lets you breathe (not race the sunset)
- Permit guidance so you’re not buried in paperwork
- Moral support + snacks (seriously, I always bring snacks)
- Photos that feel like you—not some Pinterest version of you
We’ll build a day that’s fun, honest, and full of the good stuff—whether that means a two-person picnic by the ocean or a mid-hike ceremony in the woods. I truly got you.
