In this blog, I’m sharing 7 tips on how to choose a photographer for you!

1. Hire a Professional

This might sound basic, but it’s worth saying: while having a family friend document your day can be a budget-friendly option, if you’re looking for professional-quality photos, you’ll want to hire someone who’s invested in their skills, training, and business. The difference between someone who “takes photos” and a professional is huge—they’ll capture those in-between moments, handle tricky lighting, and help you feel comfortable in front of the camera.

2. Read Client Testimonials! 

Don’t skip this tip! Reading reviews from past clients gives you a ton of insight into the overall experience, their satisfaction with the final photos, what to look for in a photographer and so much more!

3. Find a Photographer Whose Style You Adore! 

I totally get that I’m not the right photographer for everyone, and that’s okay! It’s so important that you love your photographer’s style, because each of us brings something unique to the table. My approach is energetic, fun, playful, adventurous, and intentional. I love working with couples who trust my vision and are ready to have a great time during our shoots.

When you’re checking out a photographer’s style on their website or Pinterest, here are some questions to help you know how to choose a photographer that you love:

• Does their style match the end result I’m envisioning?
• Do I love how they edit their photos?
• Are the whites crisp and the blacks deep?
• Do I prefer natural lighting or flash?
• Am I leaning towards more editorial or documentary-style photos?

4. Always Always Book a Free Consult/Discovery Call!

Feeling comfortable with your photographer is super important! You might absolutely love their portfolio, but if you don’t click with their personality, that’s totally okay. You should feel free to be yourself. If you feel at ease and relaxed during your call with the photographer, chances are you’ll feel the same way during your shoot. That’s why I love having a quick chat with clients before booking—to make sure we’re a great fit for each other!

5. Hire a Photographer that Specializes in What You Are Booking For! 

The photography world has so many niches, so it’s key to choose a photographer who specializes in what you’re looking for. For instance, you wouldn’t want to hire a newborn or family photographer for your wedding or elopement, even if they have a few of those shoots in their portfolio (and vice versa). 

6. How to Choose a Photographer that’s In Your Budget.

I get how tempting it is to go with the cheapest photographer, but keep in mind that a lower price often reflects less experience or skill compared to someone charging more. Photographers set their rates based on what they believe their work is worth, so if you’re after a specific look or feel, choose the one that matches your vision and fits comfortably within your budget. And don’t forget to ask about any extra costs like travel, prints, film, or other services!

7. The Best Location! 

I also believe it is so incredibly important to ask photographers if they have had experience shooting at a particular location that you have in mind. This is obviously not a deal breaker, but it can be incredibly helpful if a photographer has favorite spots in the location, best times to visit, etc. Additionally, if the photographer has not documented at your preferred location, be sure to ask if they would be willing to scout out the location before your shoot to ensure you have the best experience possible!
