But if you’re asking for my take? Late summer to early fall is where it’s at!

• Temperature/Weather: 30–50°F (0–10°C)
• What to Expect: The days start getting longer, the snow begins to melt, and fresh greenery and wildflowers begin to bloom. Waterfalls are at their absolute peak, rushing with power from the melting snow. While the weather can be a bit unpredictable (think sunshine one minute and a light snow flurry the next), the trade-off is fewer crowds and more accessible roads.
• Perfect for: Couples who love a mix of snow and spring blooms, don’t mind a little weather unpredictability, and want epic waterfalls as the backdrop for their elopement.

Summer (June – August)

• Temperature/Weather: 50–60°F (10–15°C)
• What to Expect: Midnight Sun means nearly endless daylight, so you can adventure for hours without worrying about sunset! Iceland is at its greenest, puffins are everywhere, and the weather is at its most stable (though rain showers can still pop up). This is also peak tourist season, so expect some crowds at popular spots.

But first things first—how long do you want your elopement to be? Most couples go for a multi-day adventure, and honestly, it’s the best way to soak in every epic moment without feeling rushed. Iceland is divided into seven unique regions, each offering a completely different adventure. Whether you’re dreaming of dramatic cliffs, black sand beaches, or steaming geothermal pools, there’s a perfect spot for your elopement. How to Decide on What Iceland Elopement Activities to Include

If I’m being totally honest, I could write an entire guide just on epic activities for your Iceland elopement. There’s that much to experience! But for the sake of keeping things simple, I’m sharing some of my absolute favorites—ones that not only create unforgettable memories but also make for some of the most breathtaking backdrops for your elopement photos.

Renting a Car in Iceland

Renting a car is an absolute must for getting around Iceland! Many of the most epic locations are hours apart, and public transportation is pretty limited. If you’re planning to explore off-the-beaten-path spots (which I highly recommend!), a 4×4 rental is the way to go to ensure you can navigate Iceland’s rugged terrain safely.

Here are a few options to get your adventure started!

Things to know about renting a car in Iceland:

• You will drive on the right side of the road
• Gas is expensive compared to most U.S prices
• Speed traps are very common around Reykjavik (speed cameras)
• Speeding tickets are very expensive – don’t speed, friend 
• There are roads marked as “F Roads” – you cannot drive on these roads during offseasons because it is illegal, or inaccessible via vehicle 
• Headlights must be on at all times due to the fog

Getting Your Marriage License in Iceland 

When it comes to tying the knot in Iceland, you’ve got two options. The easiest? Take care of the legal paperwork at home before heading off for your epic adventure. That way, you can focus on the fun stuff—like saying your vows with a glacier backdrop or beneath the Northern Lights!

But if you’re set on making it official in Iceland, no worries! As a non-resident, you’ll just need to go through the legal process to get married there. It takes a little extra planning, but I’ve got you covered with all the details to make it as smooth as possible.

1. Gather Your Documents:

• Marriage Notification Form (hjónavígsluskýrsla) – Confirms no legal impediments to your marriage.
• Certificate of Marital Status – Issued within 8 weeks before your wedding.
• Divorce Decree (if applicable).
• Birth Certificates (original copies).
• Proof of Estate Settlement (if widowed).
• Passport Copies.
• Travel Itinerary (entry/exit dates).

2. Submit Your Documents

• Send everything to the National Registry Office in Reykjavik at least 3 weeks before your wedding (earlier is better in case of errors).

03. Final Appointment Before Your Wedding

• The week of your wedding, schedule a 5-minute appointment at the local District Commissioner’s Office (location depends on your ceremony site).
• Bring all original documents to receive your marriage license.

While we’re on the page of legalities, unlike some places, Iceland has pretty strict rules about who can perform ceremonies—so unfortunately, a friend or family member can’t legally officiate. But don’t worry! You have options. You can either hire a registered officiant or go the symbolic route [that I mentioned above], where a loved one leads the ceremony while you handle the legal paperwork separately.

Iceland’s beautiful green moss, wildflowers, and one-of-a-kind landscapes are truly magical—but they’re also incredibly delicate. The moss, in particular, can take thousands of years to recover if damaged. To help preserve Iceland’s natural beauty for future generations, it’s essential to follow Leave No Trace principles during your elopement.
